Jesse McCarthy Dr. Mark Mason Introduction to Cultural Anthropology April 29th, 2009 Estonia’s way of life to Nationhood Estonia is a democratic parliamentary republic of about 1.4 million tribe in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Finland across the Gulf of Finland, to the west by Sweden across the Baltic Sea, to the south-central by Latvia, and to the east by Russia. The Estonians are desc exterminateants of Baltic Finns, the Estonian language sharing many similarities with Finnish. The modern work of Estonia is thought to originate from the Roman historian Tacitus, who in his jam Germania (ca. CE 98) described a people called the Aestii. Similarly, ancient Scandinavian sagas refer to a land called Eistland, close to the German and Danish terms Estland for the country. Estonia’s path to nationhood has been an exceptionally turbulent one, having spent most of its history under the control of foreign powers. It has historically been dominated by German and Russian speaking overlords who very much tried to suppress the Estonian language and culture, conducting all personal matters of the state in the nobles’ alien native tongues and often requiring absolute education in German and Russian for Estonian children.
The joke of preserving their language and heritage in the face of often unlike foreigners has led to a particularly strong sense of individualisation among ethnic Estonians. Only recently has Estonia shed its foreign occupiers and carry through a lasting, stable government. Settlement of Estonia began ar ound 8500 BCE, near the shutting of the las! t glacial era.
